Akara Forsythe, MD, is a respected physician with board certifications in both anesthesiology and pain medicine. She provides compassionate care to patients at Innovative Pain Solutions Centers in Bowie, Salisbury, and Laurel, Maryland.
A native of the Washington, DC area, Dr. Forsythe decided to dedicate her life to interventional pain medicine after undergoing chemotherapy when she was 12 years old. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the renowned University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago. She completed her residency in anesthesiology at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore before going to Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta for a fellowship in advanced interventional pain medicine.
Dr. Forsythe is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. She’s given numerous guest lectures and has co-authored a number of scientific articles on pain-related topics.
Before partnering with Dr. Joseph Oppong at Innovative Pain Solutions Centers in 2017, she spent four years serving as the director of interventional pain management at Severn Anesthesia and Advanced Pain Management and was on the team of providers at the Kaiser Permanente Largo Medical Center in Lake Arbor, Maryland. Ultimately, Dr. Forsythe decided that private practice was a better setting for her to deliver the individualized and goal-oriented care of which she is so passionate.
In her practice, Dr. Forsythe is particularly interested in complex regional pain syndrome, sacroiliac joint pain, lower back pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, lumbar radiculopathies, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral neuropathy, treating pain in addiction settings, and the use of ketamine in treating depression and PTSD.
As a former pain patient herself, Dr. Forsythe has a unique insight into the experience of pain treatment and an unmatched level of empathy for her patients. She’s a strong advocate for collaborating with her patients and involving them in treatment decisions in a straightforward, knowledgeable, and compassionate manner.
When she’s not at Innovative Pain Solutions Centers caring for patients, Dr. Forsythe enjoys taking part in medical missions trips across the globe, and bringing her anesthesiology skills to underserved populations. She’s active in her church’s health ministry and serves on the board of directors at the Sunshine Kids Foundation, an organization that works to improve the lives of children with cancer.
